14th Century Plate and Brigandine Armor

I made this set of armor for the experience of working on a suit that comprised largely of cloth and fabric components as well as partial plate and mail. The 14th century was known for this type of combined armor as full plate was not yet in its prime. This was a great learning experience in regard to that mixture of different textures and how to build a model that looked like parts of it were not solid and would flex like fabric and leather while other parts are distinctly hard surface plate.

I built the armor entirely in Maya with an initial low poly to high poly workflow. However, I later decided that my high poly model was low enough density that I could bake within Substance Painter without the need for the low poly, and thus avoid any baking artifacts. The Brigandine torso was almost completely textured rather then modeled with the intent that it could easily be adjusted to make several differing types of Brigandine for multiple game factions or styles. The UV's were cut and unfolded in Maya, and the rendering was done using Arnold with a single skydome light source.

I used a variety of references for this armor, the primary ones as follows. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/562809284693352316/
